what are you reading?
I’d love to hear your favorite books of the summer. Here’s the email I sent out in today’s newsletter in which I wrote about my favorite vacation books:
I seem to remember vacations and trips by the book I was reading. They add another layer to the experience and I sometimes what I read is dictated by place. For the trip we just took to England, it felt right to take Shirley MacLaine’s The Camino along with me. She was on a very determined pilgrimage in Spain and we were on our own little path in England. It turned out to be the perfect choice. What a fantastic book. It came out about 7 years ago but I just got around to it. I’m glad I read Paulo Coelho’s The Pilgrimage first as that gave me more background into what the Camino, the Santiago de Compostela in Spain, is. This 500 mile walk through mountains, valleys, cities, villages and wild dog towns is a rite of passage. Shirley’s walk is filled with adventure, love, friendship, and most incredibly, channeling’s from her guide, John the Scot, in which he reveals the creation of our worlds. From Lemuria to Atlantis to twin soul separation and more. It was fascinating and beautiful and rang so true to me.
I finished the book on the plane coming home from England. So had time to savor it, to look out at the clouds and imagine what she went through, and the courage it took her to reveal what she had learned.
I read Coelho’s The Alchemist flying home from India last year. Earlier this year I read Eat, Pray, Love coming back from England. I finished The Witch of Portobello (also by Coelho) on a plane returning from Orlando. I was reading the Hick’s The Amazing Power of Deliberate Intent on a flight home from Long Beach, California in 2005. In all these cases I wanted to stand up on the plane, wave the book around and tell everyone “You must read this”! I guess my emails and blogs are my way of doing that.
Next week I’m flying to California to spend a week at the Chopra Center is Carlsbad. I’ve been thinking about what to take…I’m leaning towards the 675 page new biography of Einstein: His Life & His Universe by Walter Issacson. But if it arrives in time, I will be reading the new Hick’s book, The Astonishing Power of Emotions!
